SUMMARY:Chalk it Up to Civility
DESCRIPTION:A Day of Civility from Choose Civility Allegany \nJoin us to enjoy an interactive and fun way to celebrate each other and our community. While various events will be happening all month long\, at Canal Place we will be joining the Allegany Library\, Allegany Arts Council\, the Cumberland Downtown Development Commission and others to celebrate civility on April 16. We will be creating chalk drawings down by the shops (follow the path from the pedestrian mall downtown) on the large concrete seating area by the basin. \nChalk It Up to Civility is part of the Choose Civility: Allegany County\, a grassroots initiative to improve and enrich Allegany County by promoting civil conversation and kindness. The event will encourage children and adults to participate in “chalking” in designated areas of  downtown with inspiring messages\, words of encouragement and kindness. \nThe goal is to provide opportunity for collaborative conversation in spite of difference\, develop consensus in the place of division\, and create connectedness in our community. The program will feature special guests and all supplies will be provided. \nEnjoy your day but please be respectful of those that are still practicing social distancing or wearing a mask.  The public bathrooms by the shops will be open for use and to allow for frequent hand washing as well. \n

SUMMARY:An Evening of Music with the Frostburg Arion Band
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an evening of music with the Frostburg Arion Band.   \nCanal Place is delighted to have the band performing at the Canal Place Festival Grounds on Saturday\, August 14\, 2021. The band will begin set up at 5:30pm and the “baton will drop” at approximately 6:00 pm. We hope you will come and join in on this FREE entertainment on Saturday. Remember to bring your chairs and blankets for seating. Please be respectful of those that want to social distance and/or wear a mask. \nFounded in 1877 the Frostburg Arion Band is one of the United States’ longest continuously functioning concert bands. The band takes its name from the Ancient Greek musician Arion – the “jolly mon” of Corinth who also is credited with inventing the lyre. The band is composed mainly of amateur instrumentalists of all ages and skill levels\, from the city of Frostburg and the surrounding areas. These volunteer community members carry on the long tradition of musical entertainment performing a mixture of marches\, medleys and old favorites at various locations throughout the year. \nFor this performance they hope to play a mix of their favorite medleys from Walt Disney\, Andrew Lloyd Webber and My Fair Lady\, folk music from Clare Grundman and Gustav Holst\, as well as some favorites from the Big Band Era along with some patriotic numbers. \nIn case of stormy weather this event will be cancelled.
