The First Public School in Allegany County

Founded in 1799, The Allegany County Academy, was the county’s first public shool.

The growing population of Cumberland soon called for a larger public school, and this Greek Revival structure was constructed in 1849.

The Washington Street Library first opened its doors here on June 19, 1934, and an addition was constructed in 1966, allowing for the expansion of the library collection.

Today, the Washington Street Library houses the largest reference collection in the Allegany County Library System, and offers an extensive local history area in the Maryland Room. A full range of community organizations proudly meet here each month.
